about try talking

Try Talking was launched in early 2019 and has grown in reputation among individuals, couples and organisations requiring support with mental health. We aim to challenge mental‑health stigma by reaching clients within environments where they feel comfortable and supported in their personal development both physically and mentally. We believe in the mental‑health benefits of exercise, so we offer sessions from gym environments through partnerships, but we also have private rooms away from the gym for those who may not feel comfortable there.

Our vision is for psychotherapy, counselling, mental‑health awareness and education to be normalised; for mental‑health stigma to be eradicated; and for individuals to be professionally supported as and when they need it. As we continue to grow, we aim to increase our clinic locations and provide remote therapy sessions to reach all corners of the UK.

Shelley – Founder & Counsellor, North

Shelley founded Try Talking in 2019, following postgraduate studies in counselling and psychotherapy, concluding in specialist research into the psychological support requirements of athletes transitioning out of sport. Her research and the name of the company were inspired by her rugby career of 20 + years. She offers person‑centred counselling for individuals and couples, creating a non‑judgemental environment where openness and personal development can take place.

To read more about the research I have conducted on attitudes toward psychological support requirements during transitions out of sport, please follow this link. It is based on this research that the specialist services provided by Try Talking for athletes and sporting organisations have been developed, with an aim to fight the stigma against seeking support and normalising therapy in even the most competitive environments.
